Fake job scam on YouTube, Facebook: SLBFE alerts

Colombo, June 30 (Daily Mirror) - The Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE) says it has received information about a fake foreign job scam being run through social media platforms like YouTube and Facebook.

According to reports, a person who had worked in Dubai is behind this scam. He has been claiming to offer jobs in Dubai to unsuspecting Sri Lankans.

The scam involves collecting video statements from Sri Lankan workers in Dubai. These videos are then dishonestly edited to make it appear as if those workers received jobs through the scammer. These false videos are posted on social media to attract more people.

The SLBFE’s Special Investigation Unit is now looking into this scam. Several victims who lost money to the fraud have already made complaints to the Bureau, and the cases have been reported to court. Investigations are continuing.

The Bureau reminds the public that only licensed foreign job agents are allowed to collect money for overseas jobs. Also, special permission from the Bureau is needed for job advertisements. If anyone takes money or advertises foreign jobs without proper approval, it is a punishable crime under the Bureau’s Act.

The SLBFE urges the public not to trust such misleading advertisements on social media. People are requested to report any information about such scams by calling 1989 or the Special Investigations Division on 0112864123.

The Bureau thanks the public for their support in keeping Sri Lankan job seekers safe.
