Failure to give basic needs caused cattle death in EP: Governor

The recent death of cattles in the Eastern Province was due to extreme cold weather and allowing them to roam freely in forests without being given basic needs, provincial animal production and health department said.

They said 256 cows in the Batticaloa district, 210 in Trincomalee district and 16 in Ampara district have died due to the extreme cold weather.

In order to save animals from such situations, Eastern Province Governor Anuradha Yahampath ordered the Animal Production and Health Department director to take necessary measures to inform the concerned farmers immediately.

She told the director to advise the farmers to provide enough food and water to the animals and to prepare necessary bonfires to warm them around the animal barn.

As the extreme cold weather had subsided, the farmers have been able to ensure the safety of the animals, the Animal Production and Health Department said.

The governor ordered the provincial authorities to look into the necessary measures to deal with the farmers who allow the animals to roam freely without providing them with basic needs. (Chaturanga Pradeep Samarawickrama)

Authorities don't want to point the finger about the air pollution, which is still affecting the areas where the cattle died. India will continue to make poison air which will come to our nation too. India like our country backward always blame the went, but never take responsibility for the air pollution affecting their own people and now ours too. Unless India is stopped from polluting the air as much, we will continue to see deaths of animals and people in our country too.

Germans have white skin even, which has evolved for the colder climate. The cows in Sri Lanka who died (in the particular areas) are of Indian stock with genes to better handle thoroughly hot weather. Looking the main source of our dairy cow imports, Australia, there are many varieties of cows for the cold to desert type hot conditions, but only the cold weather ones were imported as they produce more milk, while the hot weather ones were for beef.

I remember about 5 years ago thousands of cows imported into the country from Australia died due to lack of care and neglect. These cows are so free to roam around the vast country side and are well looked after by the aussie farmers who take goodcare of their animals like part of their family unlike the Sri Lankan farmer who has no knowledge how to care for these cows when he can't even afford to feed himself.

This is hilarious. It wasn’t cold enough to kill the livestock. Most likely they died of disease and there are quite a few that could have killed them. Cattle are much more resilient than people when it comes to changes in temperature. Look at the vaccination programs and test the water supply.
