FR petition filed to prevent elephant-train collisions



Colombo, March 03 (Daily Mirror) - A Fundamental Rights petition was filed before the Supreme Court seeking an order directing the authorities to develop a comprehensive plan to mitigate elephant-train collisions in Sri Lanka.

The Centre for Environmental Justice, along with its Chairman and Executive Director, filed this petition, naming the Director General of Wildlife Conservation, the Railways General Manager, the Inspector General of Police, the Minister of Transport and Highways, the Minister of Environment, the Minister of Wildlife and Forest Resources and several others as respondents.

The petitioners are also seeking an order directing the respondents to cooperate in implementing necessary mitigation measures, including improving driver visibility on railway lines by clearing undergrowth along the sides of the tracks under the supervision of the Department of Forest and Wildlife.
