FR petition filed to prevent elephant-train collisions

Colombo, March 03 (Daily Mirror) - A Fundamental Rights petition was filed before the Supreme Court seeking an order directing the authorities to develop a comprehensive plan to mitigate elephant-train collisions in Sri Lanka.

The Centre for Environmental Justice, along with its Chairman and Executive Director, filed this petition, naming the Director General of Wildlife Conservation, the Railways General Manager, the Inspector General of Police, the Minister of Transport and Highways, the Minister of Environment, the Minister of Wildlife and Forest Resources and several others as respondents.

The petitioners are also seeking an order directing the respondents to cooperate in implementing necessary mitigation measures, including improving driver visibility on railway lines by clearing undergrowth along the sides of the tracks under the supervision of the Department of Forest and Wildlife.

Clearing sides and illuminating the railway track will not serve any purpose if the train speed is high and not slow. The power for illumination will cause electrocution of elephants leading to deaths, unabated. Ridiculous indeed!

Well done, Gentlemen! Finally some proper steps taken to mitigate this totally unacceptable situation with regard to our majestic elephants. Kudos to you all and let us also do the same for our elephants held in captivity, our leopards being poached and killed covertly, as well as our innocent dogs and puppies that go through immense suffering, hunger, abuse and death. ‘The prevention of cruelty to animals act’ has to be passed, implemented and severe punishment meted out to those responsible for the abuse of animals. Let us uphold the teachings of the Lord Buddha on the sentience of animals.

What about the jungles taken by political henchmen like Chandrasena (Wilpaththuwa and Kalawewa), Rishad Bathudeen (Wilpaththuwa), betel chewing Wimalaweera of Ampara, etc., Even now in Yala, Sigiriya, etc. including Walsapugala as neeed to given back to those and improvised explosives known as Hakka patas? Over 3,527 elephants have been killed during the last ten years. So, it is better to capture all the marauding wild elephants and auction them starting from the Horowpathana herd till the jungles are given back to those, perfectly without improvised explosives known as Hakka patas.

Good points raised here. I do agree with what you have said with regard to the inhumane use of “Hakka Pattas” and other sadistic ways used to kill even baby elephants which is too graphic to describe on a public forum. The notion is to kill them when they are young and naive so that they don’t grow up to be “pests” according to those who attest to this sick way of thinking. However, capturing these animals and relocating to temporary shelters whilst their rightful areas are given back to them isn’t going to happen. You know once our corrupt people take over a piece of land, and that too free or by using dubious means, getting that very same parcel of land back from them is almost next to impossible. It would be best to look at foreign and local experts on the subject matter to come up with realistic and practical solutions. These innocent majestic creatures play a big role and are a huge source of income in terms of tourism.
