Colombo, September 15 (Daily Mirror)- The Attorney General today informed the Court of Appeal that the expert committee’s report on the engine capacity of BYD vehicles is expected within the next few weeks.

The committee was tasked with examining the vehicles, which had earlier been detained by Sri Lanka Customs but were later released on bank guarantees pending final determination.

The update came during proceedings on a writ petition filed by John Keells CG Auto (Pvt) Ltd. The petition was taken up before a bench of the Court of Appeal today.

How can someone assess the "engine capacity" of an electric vehicle ????? Or is that only something that Sri Lankans are capable of ? What's this hang-up with meaningless measurement called "engine capacity" ? Has Sri Lanka Customs regulations not kept up with advancement in automobile industry ??

If BYD is wrong, Nissan, Tesla, WW, BMW also wrong. Everyone limit the motor power by firmware. This division will make or break the Sri Lanka's reputation.

It should be motor power. It is a silly taxing system, which is based on the engine capacity. It should be based on the price the importer pays to the manufacturer for the vehicle.

You don't assess an electric vehicle (EV) by "engine capacity" because EVs don't have internal combustion engines; instead, you assess performance by checking the motor's power rating (in kilowatts or horsepower) and the battery's energy capacity (in kilowatt-hours). The first by manufacturer declaration, second by actual test by any laboratory.

If the vehicles in question are electric vehicles, good luck in determining the engine capacity. If they are hybrid's, then yes as hybrid vehicles do have an internal combustion engine The first action should be to determine what sort of vehicles they are (electric, hybrid or internal combustion, hydrogen fuel cell)
