Colombo, March 6 (Daily Mirror) - President Anura Kumara Disanayake has instructed relevant officials to expedite the process of providing compensation for crop damages caused by recent heavy rains and natural disasters.
The President gave these instructions during a meeting held today (06) at the Presidential Secretariat with officials from the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock Land and Irrigation.
The meeting was convened to review the budgetary allocations for 2025, specifically the funds designated to the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Land and Irrigation, and to ensure their effective utilization for relevant projects.
The President drew the attention of officials to the errors in decision-making caused by inaccuracies in agricultural data.
The necessity of ensuring fair market prices for agricultural produce was also emphasized, with the objective of protecting farmers while maintaining reasonable prices for consumers.
The discussion addressed measures for the advancement of the livestock sector, the promotion of export-oriented agricultural crops, and the progress of Milco operations.

Comrade President. These are called "feel good" statements. Just words. Do that, do this, it is important, expedite compensation. Budget is not passed so far. Where is the fund allocation to pay compensation? Money has to come from allocation from vote on account or from the crop insurance scheme. Just making statements to please the gullible voters. Comrade you are the Minister of Finance. Give directives as the minister not as the president for president has no jurisdiction to do that unless you release money from the consolidated fund.

Keep paying for failures and not for development or addressing the underlying issues that cause these crop damages. Put some educated and people with passion. The support we get as coconut farmers has dwindled to zero.

These paddy farmers are a headache to any government. If it rains they cry, if there is no rain they cry, if the crops are eaten insects they cry, they ask for higher prices and fertilizer concessions. What is this. Better import rice and the government will profit.

Don't you think you should encourage them to get insurance cover when the harvest is good? The same should be applicable to all agricultural producers who are affected by bad weather. An insurance expert might be able to advice.
