Colombo, Sep.27 (Daily Mirror) - Law College Principal Prasantha Lal de Alwis said that the Executive Presidency is important to maintain unity among different ethnic groups of the country and to keep foreign influences at bay.

Making his remarks during a panel discussion on Friday, on the government's performance in the implementation envisaged in its election, he said that the Executive Presidency should not be scrapped in an ad hoc manner as a result.

The abolition of the Executive Presidency is outlined in the manifesto of the ruling National People's Power (NPP).

However, he hailed the government's achievements in governance reforms in areas such as the enactment of a piece of legislation to scrap the benefits of former Presidents as promised.

Some promises have been kept and more to be done. Retaining the Executive Presidency there are advantages/benefits as mentiond in the article and also disadvantages. If the President attempts to use the Executive Presidency as a Dictator, as we have seen in the past that will be disadvantageous. So far in my mind AKD has done well

excessive independent powers of the president underrmines the rule of law and ridicules/belittling the incisive conclusive judgement given by a selected panel of justices contrarywise the justices have wasted invaluable intelligence for a dimwit president with no "legal experience" to pardon a criminal sentenced to death and knowing the death sentence has been abolished referring the case to the president is absolutely stupid and this power should be deleted from the constitution as the sentence should stand as a lifetime sentence.

No man is perfect no system is perfect. Even in the past there were good men or women. But our dumb voters were swayed by rhetoric and small benefits offered at election time. There was the time that they said will give tiles for your roof and given a single tile as token, and that is all they ever got. There are some politicos who have robbed us, still have supporters – with such fools, no system will work. But there is hope that now we have a capable honest man at last.

Rather than uniting the people, during JRJ's time the executive presidency was used to divide the people. JRJ with his subservient henchmen burned the Jaffna's revered public library and went on the rampage destroying many buildings in Jaffna, arresting the political leaders of the opposition without charges. These horrific activities were repeated in July 1983, again under the auspices of the horrendous government of JRJ. His stubbornness unleashed the violence of the 1987/89 period and when he left the country was a virtual killing field, almost on par with Cambodia 1975.

“EP should not be scrapped in an ad hoc manner as a result.” This statement seems contradictory. Is the principal advising against abolishing the EP altogether, or suggesting it should be phased out in a methodical manner? History tells us that the EP was introduced so JR could secure the UNP’s grip on power for as long as possible. We all know what transpired after. We were doing quite well with a Prime Minister accountable to the people, and accountability is the key word here. A President, on the other hand, can act freely and often get away with it. Besides, why should the people have to bear the cost of maintaining two positions of leadership? Have we already forgotten the tug-of-war between RW and MR? It is very rare to have a humble leader as AKD. He is our only opportunity to rid of the power stuck position of EP. Let him do it else the ppl will say he too is changed by it.
