Excise officers impersonating Narcotics Bureau arrested for bribery



Colombo, August 31 (Daily Mirror) - Three officers from the Chankanai Excise Office were arrested by the Northern Provincial Crime Division for allegedly attempting to obtain a Rs. 2 million bribe while posing as officers of the Police Narcotics Bureau.

Police said the arrests were made during a raid following an intelligence tip-off received by the Northern Provincial Crimes Division.

Police said the suspects had apprehended a man at a beach in the Madagall area, claiming he was connected to theft, and later falsely identified themselves as members of the Narcotics Bureau. The man was then taken to the Chankanai Excise Office, where the officers had allegedly called his sister using his mobile phone and demanded Rs. 2 million for his release.

The woman reported the matter to the police, leading to the sting operation and arrest of the suspects.

The accused are a Chief Excise Officer and two officers, aged 48, 36 and 32. They are scheduled to be produced before court.
