Parliament, Dec. 2 (Daily Mirror)- The monthly income of the Excise Department has increased by Rs. 1 billion after checking fake stickers on liquor bottles, a Parliamentary committee revealed.
This was revealed by the officials of the Excise Department to the Sectoral Oversight Committee on National Economic and Physical Plans.
The Excise Department, Inland Revenue Department and Sri Lanka Customs were summoned before the committee to discuss the matters mentioned in the report given to the President by the Sectoral Oversight Committee on National Economic and Physical Plans.
The committee inquired about the amendment of the Excise Ordinance Act. The committee also pointed out the need to maintain the revenue that the Excise Department has increased so far and the continuation of random raids will further reduce the fixing of fake stickers on liquor bottles.
The officials present before the committee mentioned that the RAMIS system will be made functional by January 2024 by avoiding the existing deficiencies. The Inland Revenue Department said that the number of tax files is currently around 7 lakhs and it is expected to increase up to 10 lakhs in the future.
Apart from this, the committee also advised the officials to focus on preparing a system for evaluating the parties who pay income tax correctly.

If they earn Rs 1 bn from taxes then what would be the gross sakes Value ? At least 10 billion. So the average spend by a person per day on alcohol is Rs 454 and Rs 13,500 per month. Then we hear the reports saying that 5 million people live below poverty lines. Are we missing something here ?

Some spend as much as 15k per day on alcohol(a few much much more). On the lowest slab at least 400/- so your average calculations should be correct. Poverty? Starvation?

Give the credit to the person/s who initially highlighted this fraud. If action had been implemented at that stage, more billions would have come into the coffers.

There have been several reports about customs were relax, unconcerned about items or vehicles escaping detection and freely running around the country. When Customs detect some irregularities, they are rewarded. Good. But at the same time, why not punish them if they purposely and illegally allowed in to the country.

Although the department income is little bit increased. Certain officers are soliciting the huge bribes and gratifications from the leading liquor manufacturers. In order to reduce taxes and other charges. Therefore the government should scrutinise the all activities connected with the excise department in order to keep the department sustainable

But what action against those who bought the faulty stickers on purported tender ? That was the main flaw where a favourite was selected by fraud, causing heavy loss to country.

Can we count this increase in revenue as a direct result of Aragalaya by common man, that caused the Govt. and leader to topple from their castle? If so, let us have some more Aragalayas to bring more revenue from corrupt Govt. Departments!

The only way to stop all unwanted nonesence is to semi privertise all government departments and sectors now days everyone wants easy money it will be never easy to stop the dealings and wheelings until change of macanisam must come to play.....
