Amidst reports that some ex-military men from Sri Lanka have joined the Russian military operations against Ukraine, Sri Lankan Ambassador in Moscow Prof. Janita Liyanage said she asked for details about them from the Russian military if any. She said this in response to a query about media reports to that effect. “I sought such details from the Russian military if there is anyone there,” she said.
Asked for a comment, Media Director of the Defence Ministry Colonel Nalin Herath said some ex-soldiers might have joined the Russian military, possibly through unlawful means. He said the Ministry had taken steps to educate soldiers about the dangers involved in such unlawful acts.
“They might have been lured through lucrative offers. What is the guarantee for compensation in case any of them dies in fighting,” he said.

If those Army Generals and Politicians who unilaterally took the credit of the war victory looked after those war heroes they would not join foreign forces.

I have never heard that there are real war heroes in Sri Lanka.

Most of the veterans seemed to be left in the lurch. They apparently are in dire straits and find it difficult to make ends meets. Hence, they are in search of greener pastures.

Lets be honest, the whole bunch of Armed Forces and Police personal in Sri Lanka are definitely mercenary culture. Otherwise, there will not be so many unsolved deaths such as Lasantha, Ekneligoda, Raviraj, Kumar Ponnambalam, Trinco University Students, French Aid Workers in Muttur, Thajudeen, White Van by Navy and many many more... . They will prostitute their services for personal benefit than becoming professional soldiers like those found in USA, Singapore, Britain, India etc.

It should be the ex-soldiers choice to work as a mercenary. Most of them go due to economic conditions in Sri Lanka. in a way it would bring more foreign currency.

But isn't this normal? Many soldiers fight with others for money. I believe there were Ukranian pilots flying for our airforce during our civil war. So what's the big deal?
