Colombo, April 4 (Daily Mirror) - Secretary to former Minister of Indigenous Medicine was further remanded today till April 8 by Colombo Chief Magistrate Thanuja Lakmali over an alleged bribery offense involving the issuing of an Ayurvedic medical registration certificate.
Suspect Chandana Kumara Siriwardena is alleged to have solicited a sum of Rs. 1 million and accepted a bribe of Rs. 500,000 in consideration for facilitating the issuing of a registration certificate from the Ayurvedic Medical Council, thereby certifying an individual as a traditional indigenous medical practitioner.
The Bribery Commission told court that the suspect demanded the bribe in order to issue the certificate without subjecting the applicant to the standard evaluation process conducted by the Ayurvedic Medical Council, and that such issuance was to be done purportedly with the knowledge of the Department’s Commissioner.
The arrest was made following a complaint lodged by a female indigenous medical practitioner residing in Panamure.
