Colombo, April 13 (Daily Mirror) -As the Sinhala and Tamil festive season approaches, environmentalists in Sri Lanka have sounded the alarm on the detrimental impact of fireworks on pets and wildlife.

According to Environmentalist Nayanaka Ranwella, research indicates that fireworks not only disturb the peace of humans but also have profound effects on wildlife, particularly birds and small mammals, including dogs and cats.

The loud explosions can cause birds to abandon their nests in fear, disrupting their habitats.

According to studies, animals have a far more acute sense of hearing than humans, making them particularly sensitive to the deafening blasts of fireworks.

With explosions reaching up to 190 decibels—far surpassing the threshold for human hearing damage at 75 decibels—the sound can induce anxiety, confusion and panic in animals.

Furthermore, researches suggest that up to 50 percent of dogs experience fear or anxiety during fireworks displays.

The combination of loud noises and large crowds can be overwhelming for pets, prompting environmentalists to urge pet owners to keep their furry companions safe at home during firework events.

Really concerned about the poor animals undergoing this horrific experience. They become lost from their familiar surroundings and often die in a new hostile environment. Please refrain from lighting firecrackers when celebrating any event.

Lighting crackers should be banned. Humans, especially in a Buddhist country like SL, should be thoroughly ashamed of themselves that they have zero kindness/consideration when it comes to the welfare of animals!

Despite many raising this concern, the dumb nuts continue to burn money on crackers disturbing the birds, animals and even humans. Such an irritating way of celebrating. Roads are littered too...

It is idiotic to spend money to create air pollution and noise pollution .

I really pity the street critters. Boarding 5 at Colombo and another 13 in the outskirts. Cannot protect them all. Our people talk about teachings but hardly a few practice. Strays will run aimless in fear and get crushed under speeding vehicles. If the officials do take action, I've heard it's straight euthanize. A country can be judged upon it's treatment towards animals. And we aren't on the nice list

Stop this nonsense and wasting money .

Talking gibberish!!!. Why do you think firecrackers are banned in developed countries? They were banned many decades ago due to the very same reason that Nayanaka Ranwella was worrying about. SL need to follow what developed countries have done. Those countries aren't even predominantly Buddhist nations. Buddhism has a reputation for being a peaceful religion that emphasises kindness to animals. SL is so busy boasting about Buddhism and never-ending "Bana Deshanas" but no real action.

Crackers are lit by those who have a third grade mentality. Because they are not recognized by society, so a loud bang will make them heard. Even extremely wealthy people (newly rich) light crackers! Because their moneys still cannot buy them acceptance! Hopefully after our uneducated people vote in the subversives, these people will find some place in society! Then we might be able to live in peace.
