Entire second shipment of urea to be supplied for paddy cultivation: Ministry

The Agriculture Ministry has decided to release the entire shipload of urea fertilizer required for paddy cultivation this season starting today through all Agrarian Service Centers.

Minister Mahinda Amaraweera said the second ship with a cargo of urea had reached Sri Lanka under the World Bank loan. The minister while monitoring the unloading of fertilizer from the ship with 22,000 metric tons of urea that arrived at the Colombo port last morning, said this.

The minister instructed the officials to ensure whether the fertilizer bears the correct weight while being filled in bags.

He also stated that the ministry has received information that officials working in some agricultural service centers are acting in a manner to make the farmers tired of their profession, and said tough disciplinary measures, including suspension, will be taken against such officials.

Minister Amaraweera also said that a group of so-called "Govi Niyojitha," who claim to be farmers' unions, is engaged in a campaign of malicious to disable farmers from engaging in farming.

As promised by the President, it has been agreed to provide a subsidy of Rs. 20,000 to farmers who use organic fertilizer, as they will receive urea and MOP fertilizer during this month.

Later, the Minister requested the farmers to cultivate without hesitation, as they will get enough chemical fertilizers for this Maha season. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)
