Wildlife and Forest Resources Conservation Minister Pavitra Wanniarachchi told the relevant officials to enforce the law strictly against animal poachers and those who start forest fires.

She said this during a special discussion on measures to be taken to prevent forest fires held in the
Ministry auditorium.

It was also proposed to present a Cabinet Paper with the measures to be taken to prevent forest fires and to raise awareness among them.

It was suggested that the three armed forces, the police, the Civil Defence Force, the Disaster Management Centre, district secretariats, divisional secretariats, the Forest Conservation Department and the Wildlife Department jointly implement several programmes at the district and Divisional Secretariat level.

"One of the objectives of the Education Ministry is to educate schoolchildren to protect forest reserves and prevent forest fires," she said.

The Minister also said that the Sri Lanka Police Department should seek the support of the civil defence committees established at the village level to protect the forests and take action against those who damage them.

It was decided to implement a programme to educate the people of the villages near the forests at the Grama Seva division level with the support of the government officials attached to the Divisional Secretariats.

It was also decided to get the support of the fire fighting units of the local authorities in case of emergencies. (Chaturanga Pradeep Samarawickrama)

So Law is not Law if not enforced as it should be. There is no strict or lax law enforcement. Just shows the level of justice and law enforcement in the country.

Redemption for this problem is already suggested by Minister Pavithra Devi - i.e.. bless a Panni Muttiya and throw it to the forest.

Law to be strictly imposed on all others except politicians. Politicians are exempt as they are the law makers, so makers can break any law!!

Wildlife minister - worship for wildlife publicly to get reputation using your prior experience! Then become the next PM - after sacking that Mynappuge Baluwardena.

Farmers are the worst offenders Sunday, 27 August 2023 07:09 AM

When agriculture ministry want to increase farm output they cause de-forestation at faster rate. Until farming is reduced more and more forests are being destroyed. Unlawful take up of forest land for farming must be punished by jail terms or massive farms. Ending support for farming is also step after that. Farming has no future for Sri Lanka, and all youth must be told to find better profession rather than destroy forest through farming. Farming also cause massive climate change.
