Energy Minister rules out privatisation of CEB

Colombo, Oct. 21 (Daily Mirror) - Minister of Power and Energy Kumara Jayakody in Parliament today ruled out the privatisation of the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) but said all employees will be placed under four companies which will be set up under the unbundling programme.

He said employees will have to inform the authorities whether they would like to be placed under the new companies before October 27 this year.

Didn't the president tell that the government won't do any businesses? Selling electricity is a business.

Recent large scale investments in South Asia seem to be mainly in the energy sector (Eg. India USD 11.8 Bn). Would the Minister be able to explain his Government's strategy to attract big investment while holding tightly to the crown jewels in this sector? Is he aware that Nigeria was exporting crude oil and importing petrol for 18 years due to petroleum sector trade unions oposing the privately funded Dangote refinery?

For long term, CEB must be privatised. Government unnecessarily spending taxpayers money to cover the losses and bonus. Privatisation will bring benefit to employees in terms of job satisfaction and renumeration. Mr. President do make CEB as private enterprise.

CEB employees are stealing from the taxpayers. Don't know why people cannot acknowledge this fact publicly.
