Energy Minister, Opposition MP clash in Parliament

Colombo, March 03 (Daily Mirror) - Power and Energy Minister Kumara Jayakodi and Opposition MP Chamara Samapth Dassanayake clashed in Parliament over the recent power breakdown.

"The Minister was in his residence at Handapanagoda with his friend Sandanayake and a few others during the time the whole country faced a blackout. I don't want to say what he was doing at that time," MP Dassanayake said.

Minister Jayakodi who responded a while later said he was with President Anura Kumara Dissanayake at the time of the power failure.

"I was with the President as there was a Cabinet meeting. Later I was at the power transmission plant in Battaramulla. I was there till around 3.30 in the afternoon," the Minister said.

The argument became heated when both accused each other of making false allegations.

That’s why it’s paramount the constitution be changed to remove these uneducated fellas. A minimum of a university degree must be set for politicians to be a Minister or MP. And also remove those unelected MPs who are currently allowed in by the “back door”. Strictly only those voted in by the people who wants the country to be improved and not those unnecessary debates or personal attacks. The amount of money and resources can be reduced and used elsewhere for these unproductive activities in parliament.

What does tihs crook Dassanayake expect from the minister? That he puts on rubber boots, straps on a tool belt and repairs the power transmission plant. I always thought that the CEB had engineers and labourers for that.

MP Chamara Sampath clearly didn't understand the complexity of the subject he was talking about. Before he starts blaming the CEB, LECO and their administration, particularly the Chairman CEB, he should have checked his speech for factual accuracy of the content. The speech was a complete waste of valuable time of the parliament.
