Colombo, July 20 (Daily Mirror) - A tense situation was reported in Ruwanwella last night when an elephant participating in the Esala Perahera went on a rampage.

The procession was organised by the Yatanwala Sri Swarna Walukarama Viharaya.

No injuries were reported despite the chaos caused by the agitated elephant.

I am against using elephants for any religious festivals or activities. Annimal cruelty. These elephants suffer all their life.

I am sorry this elephant did not kill as many human beings around the place including those priests and organisers. If at least 25 to 50 persons died, then it would have been an eye opener and lesson not to use innocent animals for human entertainment and false religeos beliefs.

Wild animals are trained under abusive circumstances for these parades. Take elephant to a refuge and let it heal. No divine blessing exists for using an innocent animal in a parade.

Unlike those days some elephants are now covered in heavy decorative clothing and light bulbs. Sometimes, only a small holes have left for the eyes which may be a quite uncomfortable for the animal.
