Election commission halts Urumaya land distribution programme

The Election Commission has banned the ‘Urumaya’ land distribution programme spearheaded by President Ranil Wickremesinghe.

Sources from President's office said the programme will resume after the Presidential election.

Good decision even though it was late. Even the teaching jobs given recently are illegal as technically it was during local government election period. I think if someone files a legal case,rw will not be able to contest.

It was a good program without any political aspirations, where most of the comman people's were benifited to get the ownership of their land at least to apply for the bank loan facility, otherwise poor people had to undergo harsh difficulties with prevalent government bureaucracy to obtain the land deeds. Therefore, whoever continue with the program to be appreciated.

It is not a good program. It is aimed at making the farmers poorer. Once the poor farmers sell the lands, we will have another problem of landlessness.

Government land should not be given away at the taxpayers' expense. These people have occupied the land illegally for years or decades and are now being rewarded for this crime. The government must develop other programs that enable poor families to acquire land and not give it away free. This will only arouse covetousness and cause people to continue encroaching land. It should also be cheap land that cannot otherwise be sold, which is given away.
