Elderly man’s body found hanging in Kilinochchi Police Station cell

The body of an elderly man was recovered from a detention cell at the Kilinochchi Police Station on Friday.

The deceased has been identified as Rathinam Rasu, a 66-year-old resident of Kilinochchi.

He had been arrested by the police due to a family dispute and was being held in a detention cell at the police station. He was later found hanging from his clothing inside the cell.

Police have launched an investigation into the incident. The body has been sent to the hospital for a post-mortem examination.

Poorly built cell nothing else. Government should look into all Police station cells and provide modern facilities with ceiling etc so that this kind of issues will not arise. Also make it compulsory to do a helath check prior to locking someone as some may have hidden health issues and it will backfire the officials.

Once a person is under arrest by Police, he is under protection of the State. All those Officers on duty need to be arrested. Since this is a Tamil and most of them in this station are Sinhalese, twisting of evidence can happen.
