Elderly man beaten to death over a stolen chocolate

A 67-year-old man with a fondness for chocolates was brutally assaulted to death in Peradeniya after allegedly stealing a small slab of chocolate from a shop.

Police said two men carried out the fatal attack. The owner of the shop and one of his employees have been arrested in connection with the incident.

The 67 year old victim was a resident of Eeriyagama in Peradeniya and father of two children. He had been living with his wife after his children got married and settled in other areas.

When he visited the town to buy provisions, two men in the shop had dragged him into the shop and assaulted him since the shops CCTV had recorded him stealing chocolates on the previous day.

Investigations revealed that he was hard up for money and not in a position to buy chocolates and that his strong desire to eat chocolate had compelled him to steal. He had been in the habit of buying chocolates for him and his wife whenever he visited the town. .

Police said following the assault the suspects had kept him inside the shop till closing time and left him by the roadside. A woman passing by had identified him and rushed him to hospital in critical condition. However he had been in a position to make a death bed statement regarding the incident.
