Education Ministry donates staff salaries to Disaster Relief Fund



Colombo, January 1 (Daily Mirror) - The Education Ministry began the New Year 2026 by contributing a portion of staff salaries to the Disaster Relief Fund, supporting those affected by Cyclone Ditwah.

A special programme was held today at the Education Ministry premises to mark the beginning of the new year and seek blessings for the Ministry’s planned activities. During the event, a two-minute silence was observed in memory of those who lost their lives in Cyclone Ditva and members of the tri-services who died during humanitarian operations.

As part of the initiative, staff officers of the Ministry symbolically donated two days’ salary, while other employees contributed one day’s salary to the government fund providing relief to affected communities.

Speaking at the event, Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education Minister and Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya, Deputy Minister Dr. Madura Seneviratne, and Secretary to the Ministry of Education Nalaka Kaluwewa addressed the staff, extending New Year greetings and emphasizing the importance of collective effort in achieving the Ministry’s future plans.

The programme was attended by all staff members, including Additional Secretaries, staff officers, and religious leaders who participated in the ceremonies.
