EC agrees to hold LG polls at earliest date: Tilvin

Colombo, Feb 19 (Daily Mirror) - The Elections Commission agreed to hold the Local Government elections at the earliest possible date, JVP General Secretary Tilvin Silva said today.

He told the media after meeting the Elections Commission officials that some opposition parties were attempting to get the LG polls postponed again and that it is against democracy.

Silva said some political parties that were rejected by the people had met the Ections Commission recently and cited various reasons to postpone the Local Government elections.

"They postponed the elections earlier. Even after enacting required laws to hold the election, they are attempting to postpone the election. It is against democracy," he said.

Silva said the NPP representatives met the Elections Commission officials and discussed holding the LG polls as early as possible as it is an election which had been postponed for a long time.

He said as per the powers vested in the Commission and the Supreme Court decision, the elections can be held as early as possible.

NPP representatives including JVP General Secretary Tilvin Silva, Leader of the House Minister Bimal Ratnayake, Deputy Minister Sunil Watagala and NPP General Secretary Nihal Abeysinghe attended the meeting with the Elections Commission.
