Young Sri Lankan cricketer Dunith Wellalage said his late father’s only wish was for him to become a good player and represent the country, a promise he is determined to fulfill.
Wellalage, who returned to Sri Lanka during the Asia Cup following his father’s sudden demise, made the remarks before departing the island this morning (20) to rejoin the national team.
“I have received great support from my father since childhood. His only wish was for me to play for the country, and I will definitely fulfill that wish,” Wellalage said.
He added that the upcoming Asia Cup matches provide an opportunity to give his best for the team. “I have received immense support from Sanath sir, captain Charith aiya, my teammates, and the people of Sri Lanka. That strength means a lot to me,” he said.
Reflecting on his father’s role in his cricketing journey, Wellalage said, “From morning till night, my father stood by me for cricket. Because of his sacrifice, I am representing the country today. I know his wishes, and I will fulfill them all for him.”
