The prevailing dry weather conditions across Sri Lanka are likely to change by the first week of September, the Department of Meteorology said.
Speaking to the Daily Mirror, Deputy Director Meryl Mendis stated that the sun will be directly over Sri Lanka from August 28 to September 07 due to its apparent southward relative motion.
He further explained that while many parts of the country have been experiencing unusually dry conditions, the forecast suggests temporary relief with scattered rainfall.
However, showers are expected in several areas during the beginning of next month.
Meanwhile, health experts have advised the public to stay hydrated and avoid prolonged exposure to the sun during this period of intense heat.
Drinking plenty of water, consuming fruits with high water content such as watermelon and papaya, and limiting outdoor activities during peak daylight hours can help reduce the risk of dehydration and heat-related illnesses.
People are also encouraged to wear light-coloured, loose-fitting clothing, use umbrellas or hats when outdoors, and take frequent breaks if engaged in strenuous activities.
Further, children and the elderly, who are more vulnerable to extreme weather, should be given special attention to ensure their well-being.
