Colombo, January 1 (Daily Mirror) - A Police Constable and a Civil Security Constable on traffic duty in the Ambalantota town were knocked down by a motorcar when they signalled to halt and had fled the scene.
The injured police officer who was rushed to the Ambalantota General Hospital by the 1990 Ambulance Service succumbed to his injuries on admission.
The Civil Security Constable was admitted to the Ambalantota Divisional Hospital.
The deceased PC 82615 M. Sarath Kumara, attached to Ambalantota police and the Civil Security constable were on duty at the traffic checkpoint near the Ambalantota bridge in the early hours of the morning. When they signalled a speeding motorcar to halt, it had knocked them down and sped away.
During investigations, the police seized the motorcar involved in the incident and two individuals who had been on board.
Hambantota SP Aruna Lal said the motorcar involved in the incident was seized and two individuals who had been in the vehicle at the time of the incident were arrested. He said the two suspects were under the influence of liquor.
Ambalantota police are conducting further investigations.
