Drug legalisation in Israel increases addiction among Sri Lankan workers: Ambassador

Colombo, March 6 (Daily Mirror) - The legalisation of certain drugs and its widespread use in Israel, has resulted in Sri Lankans living in the country becoming addicted to substances such as ice and marijuana, leading to mental instability, Ambassador of Sri Lanka to the State of Israel Nimal Bandara claimed.

Addressing the media he said that this has led to Sri Lanka potentially losing some of its future job opportunities or fellow Sri Lankans losing their jobs in Israel altogether.

He said that Sri Lankans living in Israel have formed various groups on social media platforms such as Facebook and WhatsApp and are organising protests and strikes demanding various facilities.

"Such actions are destroying the good image of Sri Lankan workers," he added.

The Ambassador also pointed out that those who change their places of employment after entering Israel, risk of losing their visas due to changing places of employment, and many problems have arisen due to the frequent reporting of such incidents.

He also told the Sri Lankan workers to work legally and protect the honor of both countries. He further said that the embassy is constantly looking into the issues of Sri Lankans.

The Ambassador made this statement ahead of another contingent of Sri Lankans, numbering 217 workers, leaving for construction jobs in Israel.

These job seekers are scheduled to leave for Israel between March 10 and March 25.

Meanwhile, 6,096 Sri Lankans have secured construction job opportunities in Israel and 1,018 Sri Lankans have left for construction jobs in Israel since January 2025.
