Dr. Vajira Dissanayake resigns as Sri Lanka Medical Council President

Colombo, Sept. 24 (Daily Mirror) - Dr. Vajira Dissanayake has tendered his resignation as the President Sri Lanka Medical Council (SLMC).

In a letter addressed to Health Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa, Dr. Dissanayake said the decision follows the withdrawal of the appeal applications filed before the Supreme Court relating to the office of the President of the SLMC.

The judgment stems from a legal battle dating back to 2020, when then Health Minister Pavithra Wanniarachchi removed SLMC President Prof. Harendra Silva and four others.

The Court of Appeal later nullified that move, ruling it illegal and arbitrary.

However, the appeal filed against Court of Appeal ruling was withdrawn before the Supreme Court.

In pursuant to the withdrawal of the appeals, the judgment of the Court of Appeal stands operative.

Daily Mirror inadvertently published an article on September 19 stating that Dr. Vajira Dissanayake was removed from office following a court ruling. Dr. Dissanayake has requested a correction, clarifying that the appeals were withdrawn, not dismissed. We regret the error.
