Don’t slash SVAT for SL exports: Sajith tells IMF representatives

Colombo, October 2 (Daily Mirror) - Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa today urged the International Monetary Fund (IMF) not to slash the Simplified Value Added Tax (SVAT) for Sri Lankan exports to Europe.

Premadasa, who met IMF Mission Chief Evan Papageorgiou and Resident Representative Martha Worldemichael in Colombo, informed them that Sri Lankan exporters will be affected if the SVAT is slashed.

He therefore requested the IMF officials to consider his request.

Government Minister mixing up Guinness Book and Nobel Prize !! How will they understand Inflation/ GDP/GNP /Balance of Payment etc. Debt repayment/ Re- Structuring. Have they heard of Paris Club ?? Think its a Pub !! Good at painting Stations/Bus Stands !!

Why not tell IMF to tell the finance minister to widen the PAYE tax slabs also and consider reducing the slab rates as well? Many salaried persons are living a hand to mouth existence and not sure if they can consistently feed their families until the next pay cheque.

In what capacity is he authorised to make this request on behalf of the government? Isn't there a finance minister whose job is to discuss such matters with foreign economic policy makers? I'm at a loss as to who does what in this country.
