Colombo, Feb 13 (Daily Mirror) - Opposition parties who met the chairman of the Election Commission and other members have informed them not to rush to fix a date for the Local Government election thus indicating that they are looking for a postponement of the election.
The Opposition actually called for a fair period for their campaign.
MP Dayasiri Jayasekara told media that they informed the Election Commission members not to rush towards fixing a date for the election now. “The budget begins on Monday February 17, 2025 and the debate is expected to go on till March 26, 2025. Opposition MPs will have to remain in Parliament during this period as it will be them who will be moving expenditure cuts and while they will be engaged in activities with regard to the debate. We won’t be able to participate in the election campaign if we remain in Parliament during the budget period,” he told media.
“We also told the commission that they will have to wait till the deposit money is reimbursed to us as per the new legislation which is to be approved by Parliament next Monday. The Opposition parties need these funds as we are poor parties unlike the NPP which get Rs 50 million every month as funds for their 159 MPs are credited to the party account. Therefore, we informed the Election Commission to consider this aspect as well,” he added.
“We also told them to consider the GCE Ordinary Level examination which is to be held in April and the Sinhala Tamil New Year as well,” he also said.
Mr. Jayasekara said general secretaries of all opposition parties are expected to meet the EC members for another discussion with regard to the issue shortly.
