Don’t resort to TU action, will get vaccine in next round: Home Affairs Ministry

The Home Affairs Ministry today announced that all officers at District Secretariats, Divisional Secretariats, Grama Niladharis and all Development officers not to engage in any kind of Trade Union (TU) action as they would be the next group to get vaccinated.

While making an announcement, the Ministry said the Health Minister had promised administering COVID vaccines according to the priority list.

The priority would be given to the above groups no sooner the vaccines have arrived, the Ministry said.

The attention of the President, Prime Minister, Presidential Secretary and the President advisor Lalith Weerathunga has been drawn in order to provide the vaccine in the next round.

Therefore, the Ministry requested not to engage in any TU actions as their services are very essential for the country. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)

The most important priority group is the over 60 year old and those with previous illness. They must be vaccinated immediately as they are at the highest risk of death, not just in the Western Province but across the country. But this group has no unions and is not heard. It is a shame that the incompetent government allows itself to be blackmailed by selfish workers represented by powerful unions. Government workers, who are not front workers and have to deal with infected people on a daily basis, are to be considered as secondary importance in vaccinations. There is no reason to vaccinate locomotive drivers, village servants, back office police officers, family members of doctors or the like as a matter of priority. As soon as vaccines are available for sale in pharmacies, anyone who does not want to wait for a free vaccination can be vaccinated.
