Don’t pay tolls to unauthorized CMC Reps: Commissioner

People are advised not to pay tolls if they park their vehicles on the 19 roads that do not have authorized representatives of the Colombo Municipality, Municipal Commissioner J.M. Badrani Jayawardana said.

She said that around 300,000 vehicles enter Colombo on weekdays, and these vehicles are often parked in the parking lots prepared in Colombo. About 7000 of those places have been named by the CMC, she said.

"Media reports in this regard were published and the public was advised through a press release saying that people other than the authorized CMC representatives used to collect fee for parking vehicles," the commissioner said.

She said there are 19 roads that do not have authorized representatives of the Colombo Municipality.

"Regular monitoring is done on those who assist in the parking slots that charge without the proper approval." "Based on that supervision, they are being dealt with by the courts and the police and will continue to be dealt with in the future," she said.

"After allocating such an area to an authorized agent, the public will be informed about it. "We will mention the name and phone number of the authorized agent in that area so that the public can get enough knowledge about it," the Commissioner said.

They do this by using the names of the Colombo Municipality's authorized representatives or other institutions. They used to wear jackets similar to the CMC officials, she said.

If there are such cases, people can complain to the nearest police station or call 0112698529 to inform the Colombo Municipal Council immediately, she said.

The Commissioner added that people have the right to pay the toll fee for their vehicle parking, and people should always give money only to legitimate government representatives. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)
