Doctors threaten island-wide strike

The Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) has warned of an island-wide strike starting from March 5 if the government fails to address concerns over reductions in additional duty and holiday allowances for government doctors.

Speaking to the media, GMOA Secretary Dr. Prabath Sugathadasa stated that these allowances had been reduced under the 2025 budget.

“The additional duty and holiday allowances for doctors must be restored. If this correction is not made by March 6, the GMOA will take strict decisions from March 7,” Dr. Sugathadasa added.

Looks like JVP/NPP created a monster they have to deal with. These strikes only harm patients and doctors only care for money. Not that they are a poor class of people either. So start importing doctors from India like everything else, so patients don't have to put up with this crap constantly.

Poor by GMOA to think of a strike. I would encourage GMOA to go to negotiating table for a meaningful and dignified discussion to find path forward. GMOA shall also note Country is going thorough difficulties and sacrifices are required. Furthermore a strike would certainly inconvenience public and could lead to death. If doctors are unhappy with the final outcome of the negotiation, then one option is to resign.

The respect doctors got many many years back are no more today.They are very greedy,arrogant and snobbish.It is very rare that you would come across a doctor who has patience and real concern over the sick.Instead they are very stingy and mad over money.The pharmacy companies corrupt them further and they make the quick bucks to travel to foreign countries on expensive holidays.Because of the sins they commit you find most of them having miseries in their own lives.The government should put an end to their unfair greed soon.

Better handled roughly like on Fuel distributors because their salary increase is more than 75,000 and plus RW Government increased another 30,000 as allowances which other governments servants didt get. Just because Doctors are educated by public funds (to which they also contributed ) doesn’t mean they should now work for a pittance. That way you can even justify slavery. BTW 10% of doctors are foreign qualified through private funds. Are ethical standards different to them?

Free education, free overseas education, private practice, normal MBBS doctors along with their mushrooming Medical centres are making enough and more money. Majority of them are concerned about their personnel issues like saving to educate their children overseas. If IRD investigate they will come to know how much these normal doctors make. Think on behalf of the free education received and do your work professionally and with true conscience

This is a never ending story. Please bear in mind that it is the not so well off who suffer while you enjoy your vacation. Be conscientious and give back to the people who paid for your education via the tax payer. Enough is enough. They cannot afford to consult you privately as you cure with the pill and kill with the bill with the blessings of all the private hospitals. It is a fact.
