The cabinet on Monday decided to allow doctors in the public service who have completed 60 years of age to serve a maximum of one more year until retirement, cabinet spokesman, Mass Media, Highways and Transport Minister Bandula Gunawardana said today.
However, after 2023 all doctors will have to retire at the age of 60, he added.
The deviation of the policy on the compulsory retirement age of public servants on behalf of doctors has been recommended by a five-member cabinet subcommittee chaired by Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardana, which has submitted its report to the cabinet on October 10, 22.
According to the recommendations of this cabinet subcommittee, doctors who have already reached 63 years of age will have to retire on or before December 31, 2022.
Those who have reached 62 years of age by now, are entitled to serve until they complete 63 years of age, and those who have completed 61 years by now must retire on completion of 62 years of age.
The cabinet subcommittee has recommended that doctors in the public service who are already 60 years of age must retire on completion of 61 years, and doctors who are 59 years of age must retire after their 60th birthday, like any other public servant.
The cabinet subcommittee has recommended that "the intermediate process of the retirement of doctors must be concluded on December 31, 2023 and doctors also must retire at the age of 60 after December 31, 2023 like any other public servant." (Sandun A. Jayasekera)
