Colombo, August 21 (Daily Mirror) - Three specialist doctors at Ratnapura Teaching Hospital are facing a disciplinary inquiry, despite their collective efforts to save the life of a mother and her newborn at a private hospital during an emergency, as claimed by sources familiar with the matter.
Health officials had initially claimed the doctors violated Health Ministry guidelines for providing emergency services outside official duty hours.
However, sources familiar with the incident told Daily Mirror that the specialists acted within their professional obligations to save lives, and their actions did not breach any procedure.
The sources further claim that the trio—comprising the pediatrician in charge of the premature baby unit, an anesthesiologist, and an obstetrician-gynecologist on 24-hour duty—responded to a critical case, ensuring both mother and child survived.
However, the trio had not reportedly informed the hospital Director about their call to the private hospital. Nevertheless, they had informed this regard to a deputy director.
After hearing the incident, the director has reportedly made a complaint with the ministry about their behavior.
Later, the specialists have demanded an inquiry into the incident.
In protest of the director’s action, the specialists staged a token strike yesterday (20), asserting that the trio were unfairly targeted for performing a life-saving procedure.
Meanwhile, Hospital Director Dr. Imesh Prathapasinghe told the Daily Mirror that hospital services continued smoothly despite the strike but refused to comment on three specialists performing a life-saving procedure.
The three specialists under scrutiny include the pediatrician in charge of the premature baby unit, an anesthesiologist, and an obstetrician and gynecologist who was expected to be on 24-hour duty at the hospital.
