Doctors at Anuradhapura Hospital launch indefinite strike over sexual assault

Colombo, March 11 (Daily Mirror) - The doctors of the Anuradhapura Teaching Hospital launched an idefinite strike against the sexual assault of a lady doctor at the Anuradhapura Teaching Hospital.

The doctors, including specialists, launched the strike calling for the arrest of the suspect.

The specialist doctors have also decided to withdraw from private practice in protest of the incident.

The doctors urged the police to ensure the safety of the doctors working in the hospital.

Most certainly the culprit must be arrested and dealt with according to law. However punishing all patients collectively to make the police act urgently is questionable. If this is the only way to get the police to act, then it shows that the police administration is sick, and urgent action required from ministers, Harshana Rajakaruna, Ananda Wijepala, and Watagala etc. Please note that the police have failed to arrest former IGP and the woman that coordinated the murder of Ganemulle Sanjeewa, suggesting that police corruption is endemic and the government is slow to weed out corrupt individuals that are still in the payroll of corrupt politicians, mafia and local "string pullers".

I have heard that in some developed countries staff clocking off in the night are provided security to get to their vehicles in the vehicle park. Why can't the Hospital security escort the female staff to their vehicles or the bus stop. These must be planned by the Hospital Directors

Very much so. My daughter called last night around 10 o clock in a husky voice when she was walking to her car in the parking lot after she finished her duty at hospital. This is in Melbourne. She said some funny looking guy from other side of the parking lot was waving her. Just to gain strength only she called me. Yes, they do have parking attendants, in particular, night times, but none were at sight at that time. This is an ongoing issue.

The safety, particularly of female doctors working in hospitals throughout Sri Lanka is of paramount importance and the Government should look into this urgently. Yes, police corruption appears to be endemic but it is the corrupt politicians who corrupt the police. The death penalty should be introduced for serious crime against the state and the individual.

Hey fool, this is to protest the neglect of the healthcare professionals' safety. Doctors work in very unfavourable conditions in most hospitals. No proper place to stay, minimum safety, minimum sanitary facilities etc. Dumb people like you should come forward and show yourselves rather than trying to be a keyboard hero. This is the problem when people become doctors for self-serving reasons and to boast. If a doctor has a calling to serve the suffering he would never use the patients as bait and strike. The female doctor can follow legal procedures to ensure her assailant is arrested and charged. The curse of sick and diseased are upon doctors when they keep doing this constantly.

Doctors are working for money, not for nothing. If they feel themselves or one of their union colleagues is endangered then their taking action is normal. They can't strike over pay, but they can to safeguard their safety. Government cannot make them work in place if doing so makes their lives and health worse!

Although their reactions can be sympathised, going on strike to force the arrest of the culprit is not the answer. All those "brave" doctors going on strike should get hold of him physically and hand him to the authorities without making the poor patients pay the price.

The Police may catch a person, but the AG can release them or the cases are unnecessarily dragged and the victim has to undergo embarassing examination. One of the Major culprits is whom we all know but are unable to comment upon and the legislature doesn't or is afraid to take action. Persons who are propelled to the highest posts to do the Politicians work are protected by the BAR. No wander Criminals are daring.

This is insane action by the doctors. Why penalise innocent patients. Whether the victim is a doctor or not, it should be condemned and every effort should be made to apprehend and prosecute the perpetrator of this crime. But why penalise the patients.

Have guidelines for every hospital in the island which they should follow.Lighting Parking Attendants, Security officer to accompany to car on request or similar plenty of people in the country who can be employed or deployed but have a system to follow island wide and set out guidelines in writing to ensure transparency and effectiveness otherwise it will be a lot of talk no safeguards for the future
