In the wake of the recent violent incidents at Galle Face, on a group of protestors including children, the National Child Protection Authority (NCPA) has urged protesters not to use children as human shields in public protests.
NCPA Chairman Udayakumara Amarasinghe urged parents and elders not to risk the children’s lives by bringing them to such protests.
He said several incidents of children being taken to public protests were reported to the authority in the past.
The Chairman said they would take the matter seriously and will investigate into it as a special case as this trend of using children as ‘human shields’ was on the rise.
Meanwhile, Police Spokesman SSP Nihal Thalduwa said a comprehensive investigation will be launched into the incident where a child had been brought to a protest at Galle Face on Sunday.
He said it is not acceptable to bring children to the protests as a country bound by the International Children’s Convention to provide protection to children. (DSB)
