Colombo, May 5 (Daily Mirror) - Health authorities have warned the public to avoid exposing themselves to the intense heat affecting several areas of the country while waiting in queues at polling stations.
Senior Medical Officer of the North Central Province, Dr. Hema Weerakoon, stated that temperatures in some areas are expected to rise above normal levels, and exposure to intense heat between 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. should be avoided.
Dr. Weerakoon advised voters to wear head coverings while queuing to vote and to stay hydrated by drinking water, in order to prevent potential health risks from the heatwave the severity of which can vary depending on an individual's health condition.
She further cautioned that, in some cases, it could prove fatal.
