Disruptions to upcountry trains, two-night mail trains cancelled



The upcountry railway line has been disrupted due to continuous heavy rains in the area during the past few days and the railway department has decided to cancel the two-night mail trains that were scheduled to run between Colombo Fort and Badulla tonight.

They said most railway lines have been disrupted due to land slides, cut slops, tree and rock falls.

Accordingly, railway lines between Kotagala and Talawakele railway stations, Rozella and Watawala railway stations, Watawala and Galboda Railway stations, Galboda and Inguru-oya railway stations, Inguru-oya and Nanu Oya railway stations, Nanu Oya and Great Western railway stations have been disrupted due to adverse weather conditions.

The train that started from Colombo Fort railway station to Badulla this morning is currently stationed at the Nawalapitiya and Hatton railway stations.

Due to the mounds of earth fallen on the railway lines as well as on the roads, passenger transportation has ground to a halt.

Therefore, the railway department has decided to cancel the two-night mail trains that were scheduled to run from Colombo Fort to Badulla and from Badulla to Colombo Fort tonight. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)
