Disposal of garbage causes serious environmental damage to Maussakele reservoir

Haphazard disposal of garbage in the surroundings of the Maussakele Reservoir has caused serious environmental damage to the reservoir.

When the water level increases due to the heavy rains experienced at present, the reservoir fills with garbage that floats in.

Fisherfolk who depend on the freshwater fishery in the reservoir express concern on the ongoing environmental damage caused to the reservoir that would affect aquatic life.

Environmentalists pointed out that the Maussakele reservoir is fed by Maskeli Oya originating from Miriyakotte forest reserve in Samimale and Seethagangula from the Sri Pada forest reserve, which flow through tea estates into the Maussakele reservoir, and that the haphazard disposal of garbage by estate workers and the business community pollutes the reservoir.

They pointed out that human activities mainly results in the environmental pollution of the reservoir. (Gamini Illangatilleka)

Main problem is, there is no proper Garbage disposal bins available for the public. So people are throwing it in to the drains for convenience.

Let's engage all stakeholders: central government, GA, municipal council, police, tourism board due to our scenic beauty, private companies, foreign embassies/investors, and citizens. Effective waste disposal entails reducing waste, recycling, composting, and proper hazardous waste disposal. It also involves responsible waste sorting, donations, and community awareness. Let's create a plan and act on it, starting now, not tomorrow.

We are in 21st century still don't have proper garbage recycling system in place no wonder the people have got used to it its like spitting pissing throwing liter allover the place now its normal due to poor mentality country have toomany to deal with it.....If you have been thought when growing up its a difrent ball game.

Garbage disposal had paused severe threat in Sri Lanka. Everywhere garbage are dumbed and it created huge bunds as high as a hill that gives intolerable smell. It is the blunders by the inefficient urban councils never initiated sustainable solution to resolve this issue. People elect unscrupulous fellows as councilors where non of them capable at all.
