Colombo, June 3 (Daily Mirror) - The government has initiated discussions with China, Iran and several African countries to export locally manufactured brown sugar as a variety of organic sugar, Minister of Industries Sunil Handunnetti said today.

He told Parliament that there is a high demand for organic sugar in the world market and that brown sugar manufactured in Sri Lanka is high in organic percentage.

Responding to a question by Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa, he said the move to export brown sugar is one option to raise the revenue of the sugar factories.

Is this sugar available in the market for the consumption of the locals? What is the price? We do not want to sell the brown sugar now to buy medicine for diabetic later from other countries.

Not only organic sugar we must do some research on other local products as well to export such as a variety of Banana such as red banana and other products like that of different fruit item and locally made products are almost all are organic unless we use unnatural fertilisers : One by one some times can be exported : private sectors do it but we need some government initiatives : fruit and vegetables are in good demand please come up with some strategies to export them as well .

No one even imagined that we could achieve this. We were always waiting for importers to satisfy our demand for sugar. And they took advantage of it, knowing that half our population struggles with diabetes. Now, it's encouraging to see the government making progress through development initiatives. There's still a long way to go, but what truly matters is that the initiative has begun. It’s a positive step for the future generations. However, there are certain groups who wish to undermine this progress simply because they don’t benefit from the way the current government operates.

Don"t just use the countries that the former regimes did business with. NPP must forge new relationships and trading partners with countries other than doing business with old friends. Look at emerging markets in Asia and the west as organic products have an established customer base in the western world and the emerging markets are big consumers. NPP must have the confidence to negotiate deals with everyone and get out of the comfort zone.

Charity begins at home, so make sure the people in the country has access to brown sugar for a very minimal price before you export it! Anything extra can be exported.

Dear freeloaders unlimited, there are many who are unable to work due to AGE and SICKNESS. Not all are beggars, kindly remember that. Nobody is asking for free sugar, they are asking for it to be given at a nominal price to the nation first because people are undergoing so much financial difficulties and then export it. First try to understand what's written.
