Disabled drivers to receive licences under new rules

By Poojathmi Rivithma

The Department of Motor Traffic (DMT) announced that driving licences will be issued to individuals with hearing impairments, blindness in one eye and physical disabilities.

The pilot project began in 2022 in the Gampaha district under specific regulations, and no accidents were reported during that period.

In 2024, licences were officially issued to individuals with disabilities between the ages of 18 and 60.

Meanwhile, authorities stated that these licences must be renewed every two to four years.

Experts said that the person must own a vehicle in their name, and the licence will clearly show it was issued under the disability category.

Officials also noted that a special symbol must be displayed on both the front and back of the vehicle for public identification.
