Colombo, Sept. 18 (Daily Mirror) - A young student from Bandarawela has turned to the Supreme Court, alleging that his constitutional rights had been violated after the University Grants Commission (UGC) denied him admission to pursue a degree in technology on the basis of his disability.
The petition was filed by Manujaya Attanayake, a resident of Bandarawela. When the case was taken up before a two-judge bench of the Supreme Court, comprising Chief Justice Preethi Padman Surasena and Justice Shiran Gooneratne, the matter was fixed for support on February 24 next year.
The petitioner claims that he is a disabled student who qualified for university admission after sitting for the GCE Advanced Level examination in the Technology stream at Dharmapala College, Bandarawela.
He stated that although he submitted an application to study for a Technology Degree for the academic year 2024/2025, he was informed that there are no provisions to pursue such a degree under the category of disabled students.
The petitioner is urging the Supreme Court to declare that his fundamental rights have been violated by the UGC’s decision.
In addition, he is seeking an order granting him the opportunity to pursue a degree in technology, while also requesting that a national policy be formulated to enable differently-abled students to pursue higher studies.
