Despite arrest, doctors to continue strike

Colombo, March 12 (Daily Mirror) - Medical officers have decided to continue with their strike action despite the arrest of the suspect wanted in connection with the alleged rape of a female doctor at the Anuradhapura Teaching Hospital.

Accordingly, the Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) and the Association of Medical Specialists (AMS) have decided to continue their 24-hour islandwide token strike till 8:00 AM tomorrow (13).

Normally, the two professions of doctor and lawyer are regarded as the most trusted professions. Not so in Sri Lanka. Here I have more trust in my gardener, who provides me with fresh vegetables.

Regrettably, health sector has no shame in taking the sick as a bargaining chip (I feel sorry for the female doctor who faced the tragedy and the culprit/s must be punished to the fullest possible). This has been the trend influenced by many reasons over past seven decades. Looking forward to this being reversed in time to come!

What nonsense are these doctors trying to do by continuing the strike action. From what we see is that they are trying to settle an old score for some extraneous problem in the past where the government has not given a solution. These doctors are striking island wide when this incident took place in the Anuradhapura hospital which does not have any relevance. This is not hurting the politicians but having an impact on the poor people who cannot afford to access private hospitals travelling far distances to at least get their monthly prescriptions and medicines having various ailments. All this has happened because of the free education system where they have not spent a cent for their education but depended on the bounty of the tax payers. If this is going to continue the free education should be given to a point but after that let these students ensure that they pay for their education as today we see that the public suffer inspite of paying taxes for these ungrateful morons!!!! .

Whose fault is it that a woman who happens to be a medical graduate got raped? Certainly not the Minister, GOSL, or the unfortunate patients who are victimized by their action. If at all it is the incompetence of a medical graduate posing as a psychiatrist, who failed to diagnose and treat the mentally deranged patient. Living proof of the failure of the medical graduates posing as 'Doctors of Medicine'
