Deputy Minister condemns SLTB union action, strike linked to Namal

Colombo, August 28 (Daily Mirror) - Transport and Highways Deputy Minister Dr. Prasanna Gunasena strongly condemned the trade union action launched by Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) employees, claiming that it was initiated following discussions with Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) MP Namal Rajapaksa.

Explaining the situation, the Deputy Minister said the private–public joint timetable was not a new concept and had already been implemented in some provinces. He noted that the timetable is currently in operation in the Southern Province and was recently extended to the Puttalam (A5) route.

Dr. Gunasena assured that the implementation of the joint timetable would not weaken the SLTB service. He added that the government has already allocated funds to strengthen SLTB operations, with further allocations expected in the upcoming budget.

“Even though the trade union action has been launched, it will not succeed. The Ministry is prepared to operate 90 percent of the buses during the strike,” he said.

He further warned that strict legal action will be taken against anyone attempting to sabotage or disrupt the bus operations by force.

The Deputy Minister urged the public not to be alarmed by the trade union action and assured that transport services will continue without disruptions.

Meanwhile, SLTB employees began a nationwide strike last night in protest against the implementation of the private–public joint timetable.
