Steps will be taken to absorb the Dengue Prevention Assistants to the permanent cadre, though the Department of Management Services has objected to making them permanent, Health Minister Keheliya Rambukwella said today.

The Minister told Parliament that he had submitted three Cabinet Papers regarding the matter and that the Department of Management Services has objected to the move.

"These Dengue Prevention Assistants were recruited in 2016, without basic qualifications. However, they have served for eight years. We cannot consider their qualifications now. I have submitted three Cabinet Papers to make them permanent. However, the Department of Management Services has objected to it. I have signed another Cabinet Paper to be presented at the next Cabinet meeting. I have decided to personally meet the officials of the Department of Management Services regarding the matter," he said.

The Minister said this in response to a question by Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa whether some 8,000 Dengue Prevention Assistants would be absorbed to the permanent cadre.

The Minister said these Dengue Prevention Assistants were paid only Rs. 700 per day. (Ajith Siriwardana and Yiohan Perera)

This is very irresponsible of the Minister. He is playing politics with government appointment. He can't say they are not qualified but its too late as they were appointed temporarily some years ago. We are now talking of permanent appointments. He needs to be sacked. Bring back Rajitha.

You are missing the point altogether , these assistants without any qualifications have done the job SUCCESSFULLY FOR EIGHT LONG YEARS. This is the same job when doctors do , we think of doctors are very clever.

Dengue is a MEDICAL PROBLEM so what these Dengue Assistant people ( with no qualifications ) successfully did was medical job. If this Dengue had affected say only ten people in Sri Lanka, do you think the doctors would have allowed others to come and deal with dengue , the doctors themselves would have dealt with the problem and people in Sri Lanka would have praised the “ genius “ of the doctors. Moral of the story is the job what doctors do is neither scientific nor very difficult . Any fool can be quickly trained to do doctors job.

You are absolutely right mate . In Britain our special forces ( SAS and SBS ) are trained to perform battlefield surgeries including brain surgeries behind enemy lines. We are talking about brave young men who left school at 16 and later became special forces operatives, they are the Surgeons for fellow soldiers.These same surgeries in the society is done by “ highly qualified “ Surgeons with “ half a dozen qualifications “. By the way up until about 125 years ago , all the surgeries in Britain were done by Barbers, yes your local barbers. I exactly agree with you , “ any average person can be trained to become a doctor in just SIX months”.

This will make the absorbed officers to become very lethargic and inefficient to their job. They will start working with trade unions as usual. In the mean time ministry also will send their catches in to the permanent carder without any qualifications.. This is Mahinders style.

What tasks do the officers do? Has there been any evaluation of their performance? Adding 8000 people to the staff without any evaluation, when they are not qualified doesn't make sense. The good officers should be identified, and then hired if the need exists. The officers were probably appointed as temporary because there was a temporary need.
