Defence agreement not detrimental to Sri Lanka: President

Colombo, April 7 (Daily Mirror) - While claiming that the defence agreement with India is not detrimental to the country, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake said today that agreements were only reached to regulate existing joint operations, training programmes and research activities between India and Sri Lanka.

Addressing an election rally in Galle, he said Sri Lanka should seek assistance from countries with advanced technology and skills in the field of defence.

"There is a controversy regarding the defence agreement with India. There is nothing to worry. We have only regulated the existing joint operations, training programmes and research activities between the two countries. We need to establish regional security. We need to obtain the assistance of those who are more advanced and skilled. Otherwise, we cannot move forward," he said.

The President said the government was forced to seek the assistance of other countries as previous governments had failed to develop science and new technology for the last 76 years where military technology has developed hugely.
