Colombo, April 17 (Daily Mirror) - The monthly expenses of a person in Sri Lanka decreased in February compared to January, the Census and Statistics Department said.

They said the minimum amount required for a person in this country to meet their basic needs is Rs. 16,975 per month, and a person living in the Colombo district needs Rs. 18,308 to meet the minimum basic needs.

The Department revealed this while releasing the Official Poverty Line Chart for the month of February 2024.

According to the National Consumer Price Index released for this month, the main reason for the reduction of the poverty line was that inflation in the country has decreased compared to the previous month.

The Department further mentioned that the lowest monthly expenditure is Rs. 16,231 in the Moneragala district.

Using Statistical analysis a new thing to you? It has been for hundreds of years. This data might not be very accurate but its enough to give a high level perspective, and as we digitise our systems and are able to have more data, these become quite accurate.

January has 31 days where February 29. Definitely there is a drop.

@Joshua: This is for an individual. Not for a family. If you have a family of six, then you would need 108,000/= in Colombo, and that is for just the basic needs. Not including biscuits, chocolates, wifi, etc. I don't know if they included house rent as well.

If Ranil loses he will happily go home knowing very well that he has set a near impossible benchmark. Also now the entire financial world has immense respect for him about the way he handled the crumbled economy to bring it to this level. In fact, every leader has said that. So why would he care?

Useless, irrational and unrealistic statistics. Nothing to say about the outcomes of the decisions taken based on these statistics. It's a sheer waste of money to maintain these departments to produce these reports.

What happens if someone needs to find lodging in colombo? Food and lodging cost ? 30000/- for a single person. If there is transport cost involved then another 10000-15000 additional cost. Then how about light/water/phone bills ??? Then how about medicines if needed... you need to sum up all to find the real cost of living. You will need at least 50000/- per person ......
