Debit, credit card payment system introduced on expressways from today

Colombo, May 21 (Daily Mirror) - The Transport Ministry announced that a new payment system allowing debit and credit card transactions at expressway toll gates was officially launched today (21), marking a significant step in the government’s ongoing digitalisation drive.

The initiative, introduced in line with the government’s broader move to modernise and digitalise state services, has been implemented on several key expressways across the country. The newly introduced card payment facility will be available on the Southern Expressway, the Colombo–Katunayake Expressway, and the Meerigama–Kurunegala section of the Central Expressway.

According to the Ministry, preliminary arrangements have been made in accordance with a sustainable operational plan to ensure the smooth functioning of the programme. As part of the rollout, trained officials have been assigned to assist motorists at the toll gates.

The new service covers 35 interchanges and 119 exit gates across the three expressways, providing commuters with a convenient, cashless option for toll payments.

The Ministry said that this move aims to enhance efficiency, reduce cash handling and offer a more streamlined experience for expressway users.
