Colombo, April 1 (Daily Mirror) - Colombo High Court Judge Navaratna Marasinghe today sentenced underworld gang member S.F. Sarath to death for the murder of Hettiarachilage Duminda, also known as Chanaka, who was shot dead at the Yoga Salon in Borella Vanathamulla on the night of August 1, 2014.
Convict, Kovila Gedara Dissanayake Mudalige Sarath Bandara, was found guilty of the crime beyond reasonable doubt and sentenced to death accordingly by the High Court.
According to the prosecution, the convict had entered the premises with a firearm on the night of the incident and deliberately opened fire on the victim.
Judge Marasinghe, delivering the verdict, stated that the evidence confirmed beyond reasonable doubt that the accused had committed the shooting with the intent to cause death, warranting the capital punishment.
Meanwhile, three other accused in the case Ravi Jayanath, also known as Dematagoda Chaminda, Pubudu Dushmantha, and Sameera Saranga, also known as Sudu were acquitted and released from all charges as the prosecution failed to prove allegations beyond reasonable doubt.
