Highlighting that the recent spate of killings is clear evidence that Public Security Minister Ananda Wijepala has failed in his duties to maintain law and order, Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MP Dayasiri Jayasekera called for the minister’s resignation. Jayasekera told a media briefing that the minister in charge of law and order has not fulfilled his responsibilities.
“Any minister pledges to carry out the duties vested in him upon being sworn in. He is also responsible for managing all institutions under his ministry effectively, once such institutions are gazetted. Therefore, the current minister of law and order has failed in these duties. Accordingly, he should resign from the post,” Jayasekera said.
“There have been 31 shooting incidents over the past few weeks, and around 27 people have been murdered. People, including political activists, are being killed at an alarming rate,” he added, referring to the recent killing of Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) activist Dan Priyasad.
He also stated that senior officials, including the Acting IGP, bear responsibility for the recent killings.
Furthermore, the MP said that subjecting every motorcyclist wearing a helmet to checks will not be an effective way to prevent crime.
