Daily Mirror article on Easter Sunday attacks causes uproar in Parliament

Colombo, Oct. 9 (Daily Mirror) - The Daily Mirror article under the title 'Main conspirator behind Easter Sunday attacks identified, Kariapper quotes Ravi Seneviratna' came to the limelight in Parliament today.

Samagi Jana Balawegya (SJB) MP Kavinda Jayawardena, while referring to it said that the government should make a special statement on the issue and clarify the correct situation.

The disclosure by MP Nizam Kariyappar on the Easter Sunday bomb attacks triggered an argument in Parliament today where Opposition MP Dayasiri Jayasekera urged the government to come up with details on the disclosure, while Minister Wasantha Samarasinghe called for the expulsion of MP Kariyappar from the High Post Committee for his irresponsible act.

The argument erupted minutes after MP Kariyappar said in his X message that Secretary to the Ministry of Public Security Ravi Seneviratne has informed the Committee on High Posts that the main conspirator behind the Easter Sunday bomb attacks has been identified.

Accordingly MP Jayasekera urged the government to come up with the details on the disclosure.

Minister Harshana Nanayakkara, who responded initially said Seneviratne came up with a disclosure when he was questioned about it at the High Posts Committee meeting.

"However, we cannot make any disclosures as investigations are still continuing. Disclosing facts at this point of time will hamper the investigations," he said.

Minister Samarasinghe said MP Kariyappar should be removed from the High Post Committee for his irresponsible act.

"There are matters that can be disclosed or kept confidential. A member who belongs to an important parliamentary committee should be aware of what to publish and what facts that have to be kept confidential. Accordingly, MP Kariyappar should be expelled from the High Post Committee," he said.
